Manchester carried 32.1 million passengers in 2025 — the UK's third-busiest airport and the largest outside London, serving over 200 destinations. It's also just been through the biggest structural change of any airport we cover: Terminal 1 stopped taking departures in November 2025, and a new two-terminal arrangement took full effect from 5 March 2026 after a £1.3 billion transformation of Terminal 2.
Here's the part that catches people out: the building now called Terminal 3 is the old Terminal 1 building, rebranded rather than replaced. A sat nav pointed at an old address, or a booking confirmation from a previous trip, can easily send you to the wrong door. Terminal 2 is now the main hub, handling every airline except Ryanair; Terminal 3 serves Ryanair only.
Manchester's own transport links remain genuinely strong — a central interchange called The Station connects both terminals to rail, Metrolink tram and coaches via the covered Skylink walkway, with trains reaching Piccadilly in about 20 minutes. But between the terminal confusion and simply covering Cheshire, Stockport and the wider North West, a fixed-fare car that already knows the new layout is the more reliable choice for a lot of journeys.
