THE JOURNEY

M25 and M3: the road from Dartford to Southampton

From Dartford the driver heads clockwise on the M25, joining at Junction 2 off the A2 and running south-west past Sevenoaks, Clacket Lane and Reigate to Junction 12 for the M3. That first leg is about 55 miles and, outside the rush hours, takes an hour. The M3 carries you the remaining 45 miles past Basingstoke and Winchester to Junction 14, where the M27 and A33 bring you into Southampton and the docks.

The M25 is the variable. Between 6.30 and 9.30 am on a weekday the stretch from Junction 5 to Junction 10 can add twenty minutes. Your driver watches this on the morning and will suggest an earlier pickup if the reports look poor.

Which dock gate?

Southampton's port is split by the city centre. Ocean Terminal and the QEII Terminal are in the Eastern Docks through Dock Gate 4, just past the Itchen bridge. City Cruise Terminal and Horizon Cruise Terminal use Dock Gate 8 on Herbert Walker Avenue near Mayflower Park. Mayflower Cruise Terminal is further west through Dock Gate 10. Each has a set-down lane by the check-in doors.

  • No tolls on the standard route
  • All five terminals priced identically from Dartford
GET THE TIMING RIGHT

Leaving Dartford for a midday embarkation

Most Southampton sailings ask you to check in between about 12 and 2 pm, with the ship leaving at 4 or 5 pm. We plan the timing in three parts.

Driving time
Allow 2 hours 15 minutes from Dartford on a weekday, 2 hours flat on a Sunday.
Contingency
Add 45 minutes. The M25 is a long way to sit if there is an incident, and the M3 has roadworks more often than not.
Comfort stop
Ten minutes at Winchester or Fleet services if you want one. Say so when booking.
Worked example
Check-in from 12 pm: a 9 am pickup from DA1 puts you at the terminal for 11.15–11.30.
Later slot
Check-in at 2 pm: a 10.45 am pickup is comfortable.
Night before
Prefer a hotel near the docks? We drop you there for the same fare.

Arriving before your allocated slot is generally fine; the terminals accept luggage as soon as they open and the lounges have seating. Arriving after the check-in deadline, usually 90 minutes before departure, means being refused boarding, so we never plan to the minute.

TAXI VS TRAIN VS DRIVING

Why most Dartford cruise passengers book a car for Southampton

The train option is Dartford to Waterloo East, a walk across to Waterloo, South Western Railway to Southampton Central and a taxi to the terminal: three trains, two changes with all the luggage, and around three hours if everything connects.

Driving yourself means a fortnight of port parking, which costs a sum not far from our fare, and a tired drive home on disembarkation morning.

A pre-booked car from Dartford removes all of that. The price is fixed at from £150 for up to four people, so for a couple it is roughly two peak train fares plus the Southampton taxi; for four it is cheaper than the train outright. You are collected at home, the driver loads the cases, and you step out at the terminal door.

Groups and luggage

The 8-seat minibus is where the arithmetic gets very good: around £225 for eight passengers and eight cases is about £28 a head for a hundred-mile trip. Southampton passengers travel heavy, so tell us the case count: a saloon takes two, an estate three or four, the MPV five and the minibus eight. A wheelchair accessible vehicle can be booked with a day's notice. See group minibus transfers and long-distance taxis.

COMING HOME

Getting picked up at Southampton after the cruise

Ships arrive into Southampton early, often alongside by 6 am, and disembarkation runs from about 7 am until 10 am in colour-coded groups. Because the driver is coming from Dartford, we need a reasonable estimate of when you will walk out, and we build in the waiting allowance so a slow group call does not become a problem.

  • Book the return with the outbound and tell us the ship name and arrival date.
  • The evening before, we check the scheduled berth time and confirm the driver.
  • The driver is at the terminal for your stated time and waits up to 45 minutes free, as on airport pickups.
  • When you have your luggage, call or WhatsApp and the car pulls up to the set-down lane.

Self-assist disembarkation gets you out earliest, from about 7 am; with the porter service expect 8 to 9.30 am. A 9 am pickup is the most common choice and lands you home before lunch. Return fares match the outbound, and both legs can go on one invoice.

COVERAGE

Southampton cruise pickups across north-west Kent

Because the whole route runs on the M25, it barely matters which side of Dartford you live on; the fares move only a few pounds either way.

  • Dartford and Wilmington DA1, DA2, DA4 – base fare from £150. See Dartford taxis.
  • Bexleyheath, Sidcup, Welling and Erith – a fraction closer to the M25 at Swanley, so slightly under the base rate. See Bexley taxis.
  • Swanley and Hextable BR8 – the cheapest in the table, nearest M25 Junction 3.
  • Greenhithe, Bluewater and Stone DA9 – a few pounds over. Bluewater taxis.
  • Ebbsfleet DA10 and Gravesend DA11, DA12 – furthest east and highest, from £156 and £160. Useful for passengers arriving by HS1 at Ebbsfleet International.

If your cruise leaves from a closer port, compare Dover and Tilbury, both under 90 minutes from Dartford.

Dartford to Southampton cruise taxi — questions

How much is a taxi from Dartford to Southampton cruise terminal?

From £150 one way for a standard saloon with up to four passengers and two large cases. An estate is the same price, the 6-seat MPV about £188 and the 8-seat minibus around £225. All five terminals cost the same from Dartford; Bexley and Swanley are a few pounds less, Gravesend a few pounds more.

How long is the drive from Dartford to Southampton docks?

Two to two and a half hours for about 100 miles, via the M25 clockwise to Junction 12 and then the M3. Weekday mornings on the M25 add time; Sundays are quickest. We plan on 2 hours 15 minutes plus a 45-minute margin.

Which Southampton terminal will my ship use?

Ocean and QEII terminals are in the Eastern Docks via Dock Gate 4; City and Horizon terminals use Dock Gate 8 near Mayflower Park; the Mayflower terminal is through Dock Gate 10. Your cruise documents name it, and we confirm with the driver the day before.

What time should I leave Dartford for a 12 pm check-in at Southampton?

About 9 am. That covers the drive with margin for a slow M25 and gets you to the terminal shortly after check-in opens. For a 2 pm slot, a 10.45 am pickup works.

Is a taxi cheaper than the train from Dartford to Southampton?

For one person, no. For a couple with cruise luggage it is close once you add the Waterloo transfer and the Southampton taxi. For three or four passengers the car is cheaper than the train and far easier, and for eight in a minibus it is around £28 each.

Can you collect us from Southampton at the end of the cruise?

Yes. Book the return with the outbound, give us the ship name, arrival date and a pickup time based on your disembarkation group. The driver waits up to 45 minutes free and comes to the set-down lane when you call with your luggage.

Do you have a minibus for eight people going to Southampton?

We do. The 8-seat minibus carries eight passengers and eight large cases for around 50% more than the saloon fare. Larger groups can travel as a minibus and an MPV together, and child seats are free.

Will the driver stop on the way if we need to?

Yes. Tell us at booking and we allow ten minutes at Fleet or Winchester services on the M3 at no extra charge, with the pickup time set to keep you comfortably within your check-in window.
