THE JOURNEY

Dartford to London City Airport: the two ways in

City Airport sits in the Royal Docks, on the north bank of the Thames between Silvertown and Beckton. There are two sensible ways in, and the driver picks whichever is moving.

South of the river, Blackwall Tunnel. A2 from Princes Road, then the A102 to the Blackwall Tunnel, across, and a short hop east along the A1020. The classic route, and the quicker one when the tunnel is clear.

North of the river, A13. Through the Dartford tunnels, then the A13 west through Rainham and Barking to the A1020 at Beckton. Avoids the Blackwall Tunnel and can be the better call in the morning peak. The Dart Charge is included when we use it.

  • Distance is 14 miles either way, with a journey time of 30–50 minutes.
  • There is no drop-off charge at London City; the driver takes you straight to the terminal doors.
  • Both routes enter the ULEZ, which is built into your fare.

London City has one compact terminal with security close to the entrance. Most hand-luggage passengers are airside within 15 minutes of leaving the car.

GET THE TIMING RIGHT

Leaving Dartford for a City Airport flight

Because the drive is short and the terminal is small, timings here are tighter than for Heathrow or Gatwick. The airport suggests arriving 90 minutes before a European flight. The variable is the Blackwall Tunnel.

First flights (06:30–08:00)

Pickup from DA1 two hours before departure. At 05:00 the A2 and tunnel are quiet and the run is 30 minutes, leaving 90 minutes at the terminal.

Morning peak (07:00–09:30)

The Blackwall Tunnel northbound backs up from the Sun in the Sands roundabout. Allow 50 minutes, or let the driver switch to the A13.

Evening flights

Departures after 18:00 mean a pickup around 16:00–16:30. The A2 out of London is heavy, but you are going against it, so 40 minutes is a fair estimate.

Give us the flight number and we set the pickup time from the departure. If the tunnel is closed overnight for maintenance, the driver goes via the A13. Our early morning taxis cost the same as daytime.

PRE-BOOKED VS APP VS TRAIN

Car, DLR or app for London City?

Public transport to City Airport from Dartford is not terrible: Southeastern to Woolwich Arsenal, then the DLR to London City Airport station. Around an hour with one change, and the DLR stops right at the terminal. It works for a solo traveller in daylight, but does not run early enough for the first departures and means dragging a case up and down at Woolwich.

App ride-hail on a 14-mile job to the Docklands is usually available, but the price moves with demand and the driver may not know the airport approach. At 05:00 it can cost more than our fixed £45.

Pre-booking gives you a set price, a named driver confirmed the evening before, and 15 minutes free waiting at the door.

  • Fixed fare, ULEZ included, no drop-off charge
  • Executive Mercedes E-Class or V-Class for business travel with monthly invoicing
  • Saloon, estate, 6-seat MPV or 8-seater
  • Free child seats and boosters
  • Card, cash or invoice with no surcharge; DBS-checked drivers
LANDING AT LONDON CITY

London City to Dartford: the pickup on landing

City Airport arrivals are the quickest in London. With hand luggage you can be out ten minutes after the aircraft doors open, so a late driver is a real problem. We track every inbound flight and time the pickup from the actual landing, not the scheduled one, so a slightly early arrival from Amsterdam or Zurich is covered.

Your 45 minutes of free waiting starts at touchdown.

Where to meet. London City does not allow waiting on the forecourt, so the driver parks in the short-stay car park beside the terminal, a two-minute walk from arrivals, and sends you the bay. Or book meet and greet on request for about £10 and the driver waits inside the arrivals hall with a name board.

The run home in the evening is the reverse: A1020 west, Blackwall Tunnel southbound, A2 to Dartford. Against the flow it is usually 35 minutes to DA1.

Usually 30–50 minutes for the 14 miles. Early morning and evening it is close to half an hour via the A2 and Blackwall Tunnel; in the morning peak the driver may use the A13 instead and it can reach 50 minutes.

Is there a drop-off charge at London City Airport?

No. London City is the only London airport without a forecourt drop-off fee, and the driver takes you straight to the terminal entrance. ULEZ applies on the route and is already built into your fixed fare.

What time should I leave Dartford for a 07:00 flight from City Airport?

Around 05:00. The run is 30 minutes at that hour and City Airport recommends arriving 90 minutes before departure. Security is quick, so many regulars leave a little later, but 05:00 gives comfortable margin.
