THE JOURNEY

Dartford to Stansted by road

Stansted is north-east of London in Essex, so this is the one airport run from Dartford where the crossing is unavoidable. Heading out you use the tunnels northbound; coming home you cross the QEII bridge. The £2.50 Dart Charge each way is in your fare and paid on the driver's account, so there is nothing for you to register.

From DA1 the run is Princes Road or the A206 to M25 Junction 1a, through the tunnel, then clockwise past Thurrock and Brentwood to Junction 27. The M11 heads north from there and Stansted is Junction 8, roughly 45 miles from Dartford town centre.

Where it can go wrong

  • The crossing itself. Tunnel closures for over-height vehicles or high winds can add 20 minutes with no alternative.
  • M25 Junctions 28 to 27. The Brentwood stretch is slow between 07:00 and 09:30.
  • M11 Junction 8. Airport roundabout queues on busy holiday mornings.

Stansted has one terminal. The driver takes you into the express set-down outside departures and the £7 charge is settled on our account.

GET THE TIMING RIGHT

Timing a Stansted departure from Dartford

Stansted's schedule is built around low-cost carriers, so a very large share of departures are between 06:00 and 08:00. That means pickups in Dartford between 02:30 and 04:30, when the crossing and the M25 are quiet. The terminal itself is busiest at 05:00, with long security queues even though the roads were empty.

Flights before 08:00

Collect from DA1 three hours before departure. For a 06:25 Ryanair, plan a 03:25 pickup: 55–60 minutes on the road and two hours for bag drop and security.

Mid-day flights

Allow 70–80 minutes. The clockwise M25 through Essex is heavy from 07:00, and Junction 28 at Brentwood is the usual pinch point.

Evening flights

Leaving between 16:00 and 18:00 can mean 90 minutes. If you can travel earlier, do.

Tell us the flight number and we work backwards from the departure. We check crossing status the night before, and if there is a planned tunnel closure we message you with an earlier pickup. Overnight starts cost the same as daytime via our early morning service.

PRE-BOOKED VS APP VS TRAIN

The case for a fixed-fare car to Stansted

There is no direct rail link between Dartford and Stansted. The public transport option is Southeastern into London, the Underground to Liverpool Street or Tottenham Hale, then the Stansted Express. That is two hours and three changes at best, and the first trains do not connect for the early departures that dominate Stansted's timetable.

App-based cars from Dartford to Stansted are unpredictable. At 03:00 there may be no driver within ten miles willing to accept a 45-mile job that ends in Essex, and if one does, the surge price can be well above our fixed fare.

Pre-booking removes all of that. Your job is allocated to a named driver the evening before, the price is written down and cannot change, and the Dart Charge and drop-off fee are handled.

  • Saloon, estate, 6-seat MPV or 8-seater to suit your group
  • Executive Mercedes E-Class or V-Class for business travel
  • Free child seats; 15 minutes free waiting at home
  • Card, cash or invoice with no surcharge
LANDING AT STANSTED

Stansted to Dartford: meeting your flight

Landing at Stansted late at night is common, with plenty of inbound flights after 23:00. A pre-booked car means no queue at the taxi rank. We track the flight from departure and move the driver's start time to match.

Your 45 minutes of free waiting begins when the aircraft lands. Hand-luggage-only passengers can be out in 20 minutes. If the queues are long, message the driver and we hold the car for a small charge rather than leave.

Where the car will be. Stansted does not allow free pickup outside the terminal. Our standard pickup is from the Short Stay car park, a couple of minutes' walk from arrivals, and the driver sends the zone and bay. If you would prefer to be met inside, add meet and greet on request for around £10 and the driver will be at the arrivals exit with a name board.

The run home is the reverse: M11 south, M25 clockwise to Junction 31, over the QEII bridge, and off at Junction 1a for Dartford or 1b for the A2 towards Bluewater and Gravesend.

COVERAGE

Stansted transfers from across DA and BR8 postcodes

Because the whole journey funnels through the Dartford Crossing, the fare depends mainly on how far you are from Junction 1a.

Dartford DA1, Crayford and Greenhithe are closest to the tunnels and get the £80 base price. That includes the town centre, Temple Hill, the Bridge, Stone, Crossways and Bluewater.

Wilmington, Joydens Wood and Ebbsfleet are a few minutes further from the crossing and are priced from £85. Ebbsfleet International pickups suit HS1 passengers continuing to Stansted without going back through London.

Bexleyheath, Barnehurst and Welling in DA6, DA7 and DA16 reach the crossing via the A206 through Erith, also from £85.

Gravesend, Longfield, Sidcup and Swanley are 15 minutes or more from Junction 1a, so the guide fare is £90. Gravesend covers the station and Northfleet; Swanley includes Hextable.

Erith, Belvedere, Sutton-at-Hone and Farningham are quoted on request. See Dartford to Luton, which uses the same crossing and M25 route for its first half.

Dartford to Stansted taxi — questions

How much is a taxi from Dartford to Stansted?

From £80 one way for a saloon carrying four passengers and two large cases. That includes the Dartford Crossing charge and Stansted's £7 drop-off. Gravesend, Sidcup, Longfield and Swanley are from £90. Add about 25% for an MPV or 50% for an 8-seater.

How long does it take to get from Dartford to Stansted?

Between 55 and 80 minutes. The route is the Dartford tunnels, M25 clockwise to Junction 27 and the M11 to Junction 8. Overnight it is close to 55 minutes; weekday mornings can stretch past 80 if the crossing or Brentwood is slow.

Is the Dartford Crossing charge included?

Yes. The £2.50 Dart Charge is paid through our account and is built into your fixed fare, in both directions. You do not need to register your own vehicle or pay anything online afterwards.

What time should I leave Dartford for a 06:30 flight from Stansted?

About 03:30. That allows an hour on the road and two hours at the terminal, which you will need because Stansted security is at its busiest before 06:00. We operate through the night at the same fare with no early-morning surcharge.

Does Stansted charge for taxi drop-off?

Stansted charges £7 for cars using the express set-down area outside the terminal. We pay it and include it in your quote, so the driver takes you straight to the door rather than to a free area further away.

What happens if my flight into Stansted is delayed?

We track the flight and adjust the driver's start time, so a late arrival costs you nothing. Once you land you have 45 minutes free waiting, and the driver texts the car park bay. Meet and greet in arrivals is available on request.

Can you pick me up from Stansted late at night and take me to Dartford?

Yes. We run 24/7, 365 days a year, and late arrivals into Stansted are one of the busiest parts of our week. Book ahead with your flight number and there will be a driver waiting whatever time you land.

Is there a train from Dartford to Stansted?

Not a direct one. You would travel into London, cross to Liverpool Street or Tottenham Hale, then take the Stansted Express: at least two hours with three changes, and too late for most morning departures.
