The road layout is the thing to understand. The A20 runs along the southern edge towards Sidcup and the M25, the A205 South Circular crosses at Well Hall Roundabout, and the A210 Westhorne Avenue cuts between them. Well Hall Roundabout is the pinch point: it decides whether a Heathrow run at 29.5 miles takes fifty minutes or ninety, and it is the reason we set airport pickups earlier from Eltham than from towns with a motorway on the doorstep.
Four stations serve the area — Eltham, New Eltham, Mottingham and Falconwood — all on the Bexleyheath and Sidcup lines into Charing Cross, Cannon Street and Victoria. None of them runs early enough for a dawn departure. Eltham Palace, with its medieval great hall bolted onto a 1930s art deco house, Well Hall Pleasaunce and the Tudor Barn bring visitors who mostly arrive by car and leave by taxi.
