Swanley to Gatwick: M25 Junction 3 to the terminal
If Swanley has a signature journey, it is Gatwick. From BR8 the driver heads to the Swanley interchange and joins the M25 anticlockwise at Junction 3, running past Junction 4 for Bromley, Junction 5 for Sevenoaks and the M26, and Junction 6 for Godstone, before peeling off at Junction 7 on to the M23. Gatwick's own spur then delivers you to the North or South terminal. Away from the peaks that is 35 to 45 minutes; in the thick of the morning rush, budget an hour.
Such a short run makes Swanley a comfortable starting point for early departures. For a 6am flight the car comes at about 3.45am, and the M25 is deserted at that time. We work backwards from the terminal rather than the take-off time: two hours ahead for a European flight, two and a half to three for long haul.

Meeting trains at Swanley station
Swanley station is on the Chatham main line where it splits for Maidstone East and Sevenoaks, so it gets a useful service: Southeastern to London Victoria in about 35 minutes, Thameslink through Bromley South and Blackfriars to St Pancras and beyond, and trains south to Otford, Sevenoaks and Maidstone. The station is at the end of Station Road, off the High Street, with a small forecourt and a car park that fills early on weekdays.

For Stansted and Luton the route uses the Dartford tunnel northbound; the Dart Charge is in the fare and the driver handles it. For Heathrow, the M25 clockwise round the bottom of London is the usual daytime choice, but it is the longest stretch of the orbital, so before 5am the driver may cut through town on the A20 and A2, the Blackwall Tunnel and the M4 instead.
