55 miles from Gravesend to the terminal: how the driver plays it
Picking up the A2 westbound at Tollgate or Pepperhill, the driver goes past Ebbsfleet, Bluewater and Dartford to meet the M25 at junction 2. At that point there are two ways to go.
By day: M25 anticlockwise. From junction 2 round to junction 15 is roughly 40 miles of motorway across Kent and Surrey, finishing on the M4 spur into the airport. Terminal 5 gets its own exit at J14. London is bypassed entirely, and between about 6am and 9pm this is the dependable option.
Quiet hours: A2 and Blackwall. Very early or very late, the A2 becomes the A102 into London, through the Blackwall Tunnel, then the A12, North Circular and M4. It only pays off when the approaches to the tunnel are clear, which broadly means 11pm to 5am.
Before setting off from Dartford the driver looks at live traffic and decides on the day; whichever way they go, the price is unchanged. A Gravesend to Heathrow run never uses the Dartford Crossing.

How early to leave Gravesend for a Heathrow flight
This is the longest regular airport run from north Kent, so timing is less forgiving than for Gatwick.
- Flights before 8am — leave 2 hours 45 minutes before departure. The drive is a clean 70 minutes on empty roads and you have a margin at the terminal.
- Flights 8am to noon — leave 3 hours 15 minutes before. You will meet the morning peak somewhere between J5 and J10 and it costs 20–30 minutes.
- Afternoon flights — 3 hours is normally enough.
- Evening flights on Friday or the day before a bank holiday — 3 hours 30 minutes. The M25 anticlockwise in the Friday peak is the worst case for Gravesend.
Long-haul from T3 and T5
Airlines close long-haul check-in an hour before departure. A 10.30am flight to Dubai from Terminal 3 means check-in shuts at 9.30, and a pickup in Gravesend at about 6.45am. Give us the flight number and we will suggest a time.

Why Gravesend flyers book the car rather than the train
Gravesend has decent rail links, but Heathrow is on the far side of London and every rail route involves at least two changes with luggage.
Rail
Southeastern to St Pancras via Ebbsfleet, or to Charing Cross, then the Piccadilly or Elizabeth line out west. Two hours plus with cases, and nothing useful before 5.30am.

Coverage in DA12 at 3am is patchy, surge pricing applies to long airport runs, and drivers may cancel a 55-mile job once they see it.
