MAIN ENTRANCE, HOTELS, ZOO

Where the car stops at Chessington – and where it finds you afterwards

Chessington sits on the A243 Leatherhead Road, a couple of miles south of the M25 at Junction 9. The park, the zoo and the two hotels share one site, so tell us which bit you want.

  • Main entrance – the driver follows the signs into the visitor car park and drops you as close to the entrance plaza as the marshals allow. From there it is a short walk to the turnstiles.
  • Chessington Safari Hotel and Azteca Hotel – each has its own approach and a drop-off outside reception. If you are staying over, we take you to the hotel door with the luggage.

Closing-time pickups

The park's closing hour varies by season, and on a busy day the car park empties slowly. Our driver is back in the visitor car park before the gates shut and messages you the exact spot – usually a landmark near the entrance rather than a bay number, because the bays fill up. Take ten minutes to get out through the shop; the fare is fixed and 15 minutes' waiting is free.

M25 ANTICLOCKWISE

Dartford to Chessington round the M25 – timings for a family day

From north Kent it is the M25 all the way. The driver joins at Junction 2 by Darenth, runs anticlockwise past Clacket Lane and Reigate, leaves at Junction 9 for Leatherhead, and takes the A243 north for a few minutes to the park entrance. Thirty-five miles from Dartford; thirty from Bromley via the A21 and Junction 4.

What time to leave

  • For opening – being at the gate when it opens means using the M25 at the tail end of the weekday rush. From Dartford allow 90 minutes on a school-holiday weekday; on a weekend morning it is nearer an hour.
  • Mid-morning arrivals – the M25 settles after half past nine and the run drops to 60 to 70 minutes.
  • Home at closing – the return at five or six on a weekday meets the evening peak on the Surrey and Kent sections. Expect 75 to 95 minutes; weekend evenings are quicker.

Our drivers keep the temperature sensible, do not mind a stop at Clacket Lane services on the way home, and are fine with snacks in the car.

SEATS, PUSHCHAIRS, BIRTHDAYS

Child seats, pushchairs and the eight-seater for a birthday party

Child seats at no charge

Tell us the ages and we fit infant carriers, forward-facing seats or boosters before the driver leaves the base. There is no fee for any of them.

Pushchairs

A folded pushchair goes in the boot of a saloon alongside a rucksack; a double buggy or a travel system needs an estate or MPV, which we allocate when you mention it.

Birthday groups

Six children and two adults fit the 8-seat minibus from Dartford at £105 one way, everyone in one vehicle with one driver who knows where the entrance is.

Grandparents and non-drivers

Plenty of our Chessington bookings are grandparents taking the children for the day without wanting the M25 themselves. Door to gate, and back again at closing.

Every driver holds a private hire licence, an enhanced DBS certificate and hire-and-reward insurance. Payment is by card or cash on the day with nothing added for cards, or by invoice for a school or club booking – see the group and minibus page for larger parties.

RESORT HOTELS & NEARBY

Safari Hotel, Azteca Hotel and combining Chessington with something else

Two-day visits with a night at the Safari Hotel or the Azteca Hotel are common, and the logistics change slightly: an afternoon drop at hotel reception on day one, then a pickup from the same door after the park on day two. Book both legs at once and we hold them as a pair; if the second day runs long, message us and the driver adjusts.

Other things people bolt onto a Chessington trip that we can drive to on the same booking:

  • Thorpe Park – a different day, but families staying nearby sometimes do both. See our Thorpe Park taxi page.
  • Hampton Court Palace – twenty minutes north; a calmer day after the rides.
  • Heathrow or Gatwick – overseas visitors sometimes end a UK trip at Chessington and fly the next day; both airports are around 40 minutes away at fixed fares.

We do not sell tickets or advise on offers – the park's own site does that – but we do know the car park, the gate and the M25, which is the part that goes wrong.

Chessington taxi questions from families

How much is a taxi from Dartford to Chessington World of Adventures?

From £70 for a saloon, one way, for up to four people and a folded pushchair. The drive is about 35 miles round the M25 to Junction 9 and takes 60 to 95 minutes. Bromley is from £55, Sidcup from £62 and Bexleyheath from £68.

Where does the taxi drop us at Chessington?

In the visitor car park off Leatherhead Road, as close to the main entrance plaza as the marshals allow on the day. If you are staying at the Safari Hotel or the Azteca Hotel, we take you to the hotel's own drop-off outside reception instead.

Can you collect us from Chessington when the park closes?

Yes. Closing time varies by season, so tell us the date and we check it. The driver is in the car park before the gates shut and texts you a meeting point near the entrance. A quarter of an hour's waiting is included and the price home does not move.

Do you provide child seats for the Chessington trip?

We do, free of charge. Give us the children's ages when you book and we fit infant carriers, forward-facing seats or boosters before the car leaves Dartford. We can fit up to three in an MPV and more in the minibus; say how many you need.

How long does it take from Bromley or Sidcup to Chessington?

From Bromley, 45 to 70 minutes via the A21 and M25 to Junction 9; from Sidcup, 55 to 85 minutes joining the M25 at Junction 3 from the A20. School-holiday weekday mornings sit at the upper end; weekend mornings are quicker.

Is there an 8-seater for a children's birthday party to Chessington?

Yes – the 8-seat minibus from Dartford is from £105 one way and carries six children and two adults with bags. Boosters are fitted free. For a school or club trip we can invoice, and bigger parties are split across two cars that set off together.

Can you take us to the Chessington Safari Hotel the night before?

Yes. We drop at hotel reception with your luggage on day one and collect from the same door after the park on day two. Book both legs together and we hold them as a pair; if the second day runs late, message us and the driver moves the pickup.

What if the children are asleep and we are late out of the park?

It happens. Fifteen minutes' waiting is free after the agreed time; beyond that we charge per 15 minutes at a rate agreed when you book, never a surprise. Message the driver from the exit and they pull up as close as they can.
