Heathrow to Southampton Cruise Terminal Taxi

Junction 12 of the M25 is where the M3 begins, and it is only a dozen miles from the Heathrow tunnel. That geography makes Heathrow to Southampton the cheapest airport-to-cruise-port run we do: 70 miles, mostly motorway, at a fixed fare from £110 from any terminal to whichever of the five Southampton terminals your ship is at. M25, M3, M27, M271

Heathrow to the Southampton docks in four motorways

From Terminal 5 the driver joins the M25 directly at Junction 14; from Terminals 2, 3 and 4 it is the M4 spur to Junction 15. Either way the car turns anticlockwise for two junctions and leaves at Junction 12 onto the M3, which runs south-west past Camberley, Basingstoke and Winchester for 50 miles before becoming the M27 at the top of Southampton. For the Western Docks the driver takes Junction 3 and the M271 down to the waterfront; for the Eastern Docks it is Junction 5 and the A3024 into the city.

Clear, that is about 20 minutes to the M3 and an hour to the docks. The M3 between Junctions 2 and 4 is slow in the morning peak and the Winchester stretch clogs on summer Fridays, which is where the 105-minute end of the range comes from.

Dock gates

We know which gate each terminal uses, and it matters because the port is large. Ocean Terminal and QEII Terminal are in the Eastern Docks through Dock Gate 4. City Terminal is at Dock Gate 8, and Mayflower and Horizon Terminals are at Dock Gate 10, both in the Western Docks. Tell us the ship and the driver goes to the right gate.

MARGIN FOR THE M3

How late a Heathrow landing can be for a Southampton sailing

Most Southampton departures are between 16:00 and 17:30 and check-in shuts about an hour before. Heathrow adds immigration and reclaim, which for a long-haul arrival can be an hour on its own, and then the drive.

SailingLanding at HeathrowAssessment
16:30Before 11:00Comfortable, even with a slow M3
16:3011:00–12:30Fine on a weekday; tight on a Friday
16:30After 13:00Book a hotel and a sail-day pickup

The flight is tracked from departure, so if it lands early the driver is early, and if it is late the 45 minutes of free waiting starts from the actual arrival. Where a delay threatens the cut-off we ring as soon as we can see it and talk through options.

Going home, tell us your disembarkation group and your Heathrow departure; long-haul flights want three hours at the airport on top of the 75–105 minute drive.

FOUR TERMINALS

Where you find the driver at each Heathrow terminal

The flight number tells us the terminal. By default the driver waits in that terminal's short stay car park and sends the bay and registration while you are at reclaim: Short Stay 2 for Terminal 2, Short Stay 3 for Terminal 3, Short Stay 4 across the road from Terminal 4 arrivals, and Short Stay 5 one level up from Terminal 5.

For a cruise transfer we recommend meet and greet instead. The driver waits at the barrier with your name on a board, takes the trolley and leads you to the car for a guide £10, which saves a phone call from the wrong exit after an overnight flight.

Two large cases and hand baggage fit a saloon. Three or four travellers with a case each want the estate or the 6-seat MPV from £138; eight go in the minibus from £165.

AGAINST THE ALTERNATIVES

A fixed-fare car versus the coach or the train from Heathrow

There is a National Express coach from Heathrow to Southampton coach station, and a rail option via Woking. Both leave you at the wrong end of the city with cruise luggage and a taxi still to find. Cruise line transfer coaches exist but run to the line's timetable, not your flight.

Heathrow to Southampton cruise taxi — questions

How much is a taxi from Heathrow to Southampton cruise terminal?

From £110 one way in a saloon from any Heathrow terminal to any Southampton cruise terminal; a 6-seat MPV is from £138 and an 8-seater from £165. Docks to Heathrow is also from £110 with the £6 drop-off charge included.

How long does Heathrow to Southampton docks take?

75 to 105 minutes for about 70 miles: M25 to Junction 12, the M3 to Southampton, then the M27 and M271 or the A3024 depending on the docks. The M3 morning peak and summer Fridays near Winchester are what stretch it.

Which dock gate does the driver use for Ocean Terminal?

Dock Gate 4, in the Eastern Docks, which also serves QEII Terminal. City Terminal is through Dock Gate 8 and Mayflower and Horizon through Dock Gate 10 in the Western Docks. Tell us the ship and the driver goes to the right one.

What time should I land at Heathrow for a 16:30 sailing from Southampton?

Before 11:00 is comfortable. Between 11:00 and 12:30 works on a weekday but is tight on a Friday. After 13:00 we would recommend sleeping in Southampton the night before and a ten-minute run to the terminal on sailing day.

Where does the driver wait at Heathrow Terminal 3?

In Short Stay Car Park 3, and the bay and registration reach you by text at reclaim. Or ask for meet and greet and the driver is at the Terminal 3 arrivals barrier with a name board, guide charge £10.

Is it cheaper from Heathrow than from Gatwick?

Yes: Heathrow is from £110 and Gatwick from £120, because the M3 starts a dozen miles from Heathrow. Heathrow is also usually 15–20 minutes quicker.

What if my flight lands late at Heathrow?

The driver is following the flight and adjusts to the actual landing, from which point 45 minutes of waiting is free. Should the delay put the ship's check-in at risk we ring you to talk it through.

Can you collect us at Southampton after the cruise for a flight from Terminal 2?

Yes, from £110. Send your disembarkation group and flight time; the driver is outside the terminal exit and drops on the Terminal 2 forecourt, £6 charge included.
