BLACKWALL TO OLD STREET

The drive from the A2 to Eversholt Street

Euston is on the north side of the West End, which puts the Blackwall Tunnel in the right place for once. From Dartford the A2 runs to Sun in the Sands, where the A102 dives north through the tunnel; the A12 takes over as far as Bow and the A11 carries the car through Mile End and Whitechapel. At Shoreditch the car turns up Great Eastern Street to Old Street roundabout, then along City Road and Pentonville Road, past King's Cross and St Pancras, to Euston Road.

Overnight, or when the Blackwall is closed for works, the driver stays south of the river: New Cross, the Old Kent Road, the Elephant, Blackfriars Bridge and Farringdon Road, then west along Euston Road. Both are inside the fixed fare.

Where you get out

The taxi rank sits between the station and Euston Road, entered from Eversholt Street, and puts you a short flat walk from the concourse. For the Euston Square end, or UCL across the road, say so and the driver pulls in on that side instead.

WEST COAST DEPARTURES

Getting the Dartford pickup right for Avanti and the sleeper

Avanti West Coast advance tickets are locked to one train, and the Caledonian Sleeper to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness, Aberdeen and Fort William has a single departure each night. Euston also announces platforms late and the walk from the concourse to the far platforms is long, so the driver aims to have you there with at least 20 minutes in hand.

The tunnel approach and City Road are the morning pinch points; Pentonville Road backs up in the evening. Sidcup and Bexleyheath can leave ten minutes later than these figures; Gravesend and Ebbsfleet ten minutes earlier. Heading north from a different terminus? Dartford to St Pancras and King's Cross covers LNER and East Midlands departures.

ONE VEHICLE, ONE DRIVER

Where the car wins over Southeastern and the Northern line

By rail, Dartford to Euston means Southeastern to London Bridge and the Northern line via Bank, or Charing Cross and two Tube lines. On a Monday morning with a laptop bag it is fine. The bookings we take for Euston tend to fall into four groups.

Sleeper passengers

Late evening departure, large bags, and the Tube at its busiest with concert crowds. The car goes door to platform.

Families to the North West

Two adults, two children, a pushchair and cases to Manchester or the Lake District. One load into the boot rather than three.

First trains

Avanti departures around 06:00 predate a sensible connection from Dartford. A 4:30am pickup does not.

Business travel

Regular travellers to the North West put Euston runs on a monthly account.

The fare is settled when we confirm the booking and stays there, and every driver holds a private hire licence with a DBS check.

OFF THE PENDOLINO

Being collected at Euston after a train from the North

Pass us the train time and where it started — Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow — and we follow it on the live departures data rather than the timetable. If it is held at Milton Keynes the pickup shifts with it and your free 15 minutes begins on arrival, not before.

Meeting point: walk down the ramp from the concourse to the taxi rank on the Eversholt Street side, where the driver will be waiting with the registration already sent to your phone. For sleeper arrivals early in the morning the same applies; the rank is quiet at that hour and the car is easy to spot.

For relatives travelling alone we can put a driver at the platform gate with a named board; the guide charge is £10. Continuing to another terminus instead? See Dartford to Paddington and Dartford to Liverpool Street.

Dartford to Euston taxi — questions

How much is a taxi from Dartford to Euston?

From £58 one way in a saloon with ULEZ inside it. Sidcup starts at £50, Bexleyheath at £52, Greenhithe and Swanley at £60, Ebbsfleet at £62 and Gravesend at £68. A 6-seat MPV from Dartford is £73 and up, an 8-seat minibus £87 and up.

Where does the taxi drop off at Euston?

At the taxi rank between the station and Euston Road, entered from Eversholt Street, which is a short flat walk from the concourse. Ask for the Euston Square side if that is nearer where you are going.

Can you get me to Euston for the Caledonian Sleeper?

Yes, it is one of our regular evening jobs. Pickup in Dartford about an hour and a half before the sleeper leaves is usual, which gets you to the rank with 20 minutes to spare for the walk to the platform.

How long is the drive from Dartford to Euston?

50–80 minutes for 21 miles. The Blackwall Tunnel approach and City Road govern the morning; Pentonville Road the evening. Before 6am the run is under an hour.

Do you go through the Blackwall Tunnel to Euston?

Usually, yes: A2, A102, A12, A11 to Shoreditch, then Old Street, City Road and Pentonville Road. Overnight or during tunnel closures the car goes south via the Old Kent Road, Blackfriars Bridge and Farringdon Road instead, for the same fare.

Will you pick me up at Euston if my Avanti train is late?

Yes. Give us the train and we monitor it live; the driver goes to the Eversholt Street rank when it is actually arriving and your free waiting starts then. The registration is texted to you as you walk down the ramp.

Is Euston the same price as St Pancras or King's Cross from Dartford?

Yes, all three are from £58 because they sit within a few hundred metres of each other on Euston Road. Tell us which one you want and the driver drops at the right rank.

What if we have four people and four big cases?

A saloon holds four passengers but only two large cases, so book the estate or the 6-seat MPV from £73. Eight people with luggage travel in the minibus from £87.
