Down the M23 from Kent to the coast

From Dartford the driver joins the M25 at Junction 2 and heads anticlockwise past Swanley, Sevenoaks and the Clacket Lane services to Junction 7, where the M23 peels off south. The M23 runs past Gatwick at Junction 9 and ends at Pease Pottage, after which the A23 dual carriageway carries you through the Sussex countryside, over the South Downs at Pyecombe and down into Brighton on Preston Road. It is one of the simplest long runs we do: three roads, no tolls, no urban crawl until the final two miles. Hove addresses come off the A27 at Dyke Road instead.

Where you finish matters for the last stretch. For the seafront and the Lanes the driver comes straight down London Road and Grand Parade. For the Amex Stadium or the universities at Falmer, we leave the A23 at the A27 and go east, skipping the city centre altogether.

Taking a whole group to Brighton in one vehicle

Brighton is the default seaside weekend for north Kent, and the maths for a group is simple. Eight people in our minibus pay from £173 between them, under £22 a head, and nobody carries a bag up the stairs at London Bridge or hunts for seats together on a Saturday-morning Southern service. The driver loads up at the first house and drops everyone outside the hotel or the flat on the seafront.

• Multiple pickups. Two or three addresses within Dartford or Bexley cost a few pounds extra; tell us the order.
• Coming home on Sunday. Book the return at the same time for a set price on both legs.
• Fancy dress and props. Fine, so long as it fits in the boot. Inflatables travel deflated.
• Drinks on board. Not in the car, please; there are plenty of places to start once you arrive.

Why a car from Dartford to Brighton beats crossing London

Dartford and Brighton are both well served by rail, but not by the same railway. Southeastern takes you into London Bridge; Thameslink or Southern take you out again. On paper it is one change. In practice it is a walk across a large station with cases, and a service that gets crowded on sunny weekends and thins out late at night.

For a couple travelling light on a weekday the train may still be cheaper; for three or more, or anything outside the timetable, the car wins.

Brighton station, the seafront, the Amex and the universities

• Brighton station. Set-down on the forecourt off Queen's Road. We can also collect here if you have arrived by train from the west.
• The seafront and the Lanes. Kings Road and Madeira Drive hotels, the Palace Pier and the i360. Madeira Drive closes for events several weekends a year, so the driver may drop on Marine Parade above.
• Brighton Centre. Conferences and concerts on Kings Road; drop at the front unless coned off, in which case Russell Road behind.
• Amex Stadium, Falmer. On match days the stadium roads close to general traffic and drop-offs move out to the A27 slips and the Falmer village side. We agree a meeting point for after the final whistle.
• University of Sussex and University of Brighton. Move-in weekends need an estate or MPV for the boxes.
• Brighton Pride. August road closures around Preston Park and the centre; agree the pickup point for the way home in advance.

Brighton runs from Dartford, Bexley and the Kent villages

Our cars are based in Dartford DA1 and the fares above cover the town and its surroundings: Stone, Greenhithe and Bluewater to the east, Crayford, Bexleyheath and Sidcup to the west, and Wilmington, Hextable and Swanley to the south. Because the run heads anticlockwise round the M25, anyone in Swanley, Sevenoaks or Bromley is already partway there and pays less than a Dartford pickup. Gravesend and the Medway towns add a little; Darent Valley Hospital or Dartford station make handy meeting points.
