The road from Dartford to Cambridge
Cambridge sits almost due north of Dartford, and the whole run is motorway apart from the first and last few miles. The driver takes the A282 through the Dartford tunnel, follows the M25 clockwise past Thurrock and Brentwood to Junction 27, and joins the M11 northbound. The M11 passes Harlow, Stansted at Junction 8 and Saffron Walden, then reaches Cambridge at Junction 11 for Trumpington and Addenbrooke's, Junction 12 for the city centre via Barton Road, or Junction 13 for the Madingley Road side and the West Cambridge site.
Which junction we use depends on where you are going:
- Addenbrooke's and the Biomedical Campus: Junction 11, then Hauxton Road and Long Road.
- Central colleges, the station and Mill Road: Junction 11 and Trumpington Road is usually quickest.
- Girton, Fitzwilliam, Churchill and the Science Park: Junction 13 or stay on the A14 to Junction 32.
- Cambridge North station: A14 Junction 32 and Milton Road.
The Dart Charge is the only toll and it is in the fare.
Why people from Kent drive to Cambridge rather than take the train
There is no rail line from Kent to Cambridge that avoids London. The quickest public transport route is the high-speed train from Ebbsfleet to St Pancras, a walk across to King's Cross, and a train north from there. Fine for one person with a rucksack; less so with a term's worth of belongings, an elderly relative bound for Addenbrooke's, or a family of five off to a graduation.
One vehicle, no changes
The bags go in at Dartford and come out at the college gate. Nobody has to lift a case onto a rack or find a lift at King's Cross.
Price known in advance
From £110 whatever the traffic does at Thurrock. There is no meter running while the M11 is slow at Harlow.
Timings you choose
An 8am arrival for a hospital appointment or a midnight pickup after a May Ball are both fine. The car leaves when you say.

College drop-offs, graduation and end of term
Three times a year the Cambridge run turns into a removal service. Michaelmas term start in early October, the Christmas clear-out and the June exodus all involve boxes, duvets, a printer and sometimes a bike. An estate takes a single student's kit; the 6-seat MPV takes a student, both parents and everything in the boot with seats to spare.
Things worth telling us when you book:
- The college and the entrance. Most central colleges have a porters' lodge on a narrow street and a service gate elsewhere. Forward the porters' instructions from your welcome email and the driver will use the right approach.
- Restricted streets. Parts of the centre are closed to traffic in the daytime. We drop as close as the rules allow and help carry to the gate.
- Graduation days. Senate House ceremonies bring families in numbers; an early arrival avoids the worst of King's Parade.
- Bikes. One bike fits in an estate with a wheel off, two in the MPV.
Anglia Ruskin on East Road and Homerton on Hills Road are simpler drop-offs at the same fare.
Addenbrooke's, Royal Papworth and the Biomedical Campus
Addenbrooke's and Royal Papworth take referrals from Kent for specialist treatment, and a car is often the only sensible way to get a patient there. The Biomedical Campus is the first exit off the M11 at Junction 11, so it is the closest part of Cambridge to Dartford and the easiest to reach.
How we handle hospital runs:
- Drop at the entrance you name: Addenbrooke's main entrance off Hills Road, the Rosie maternity hospital, the outpatients entrance, or Royal Papworth's own front door on Papworth Road.
- Wait-and-return for a clinic appointment, charged in 15-minute blocks once the free allowance is used, so the same driver brings you home.

Stansted Airport on the route, and where we collect from
Stansted is on the M11 at Junction 8, roughly two-thirds of the way from Dartford to Cambridge. That makes two combinations useful. If someone is flying into Stansted to visit Cambridge, we collect them at the terminal and continue north for £55. Pickups run across Dartford and the surrounding towns: Stone, Greenhithe, Bluewater and Swanscombe to the east; Crayford, Bexleyheath, Welling and Erith to the west; Wilmington, Hextable and Swanley to the south; and Gravesend and Northfleet along the river. Because everything goes through the tunnel, addresses closest to the crossing pay the least. Can you drop me at my college gate?
As close as the traffic rules allow. Some central streets are closed to cars by day, so the driver may stop on the nearest open road and help carry to the porters' lodge.

Is it cheaper to go by train from Dartford to Cambridge?
