The M1 and M6 from Dartford to Manchester
Manchester is straight up the spine of England. From Dartford the driver joins the M25 and leaves it at Junction 21 for the M1, follows the M1 past Luton, Milton Keynes and Northampton to Junction 19 at Catthorpe, and picks up the M6 through the West Midlands. North of Stoke the M6 splits the choice: the M56 at Junction 20 for Manchester Airport, Altrincham and the south of the city, or the M62 at Junction 21a for Salford, MediaCity and the northern districts. Piccadilly and the centre can be reached either way.
The alternative first leg is the M40 and M42, joining the M6 north of Birmingham, useful when the M1 is closed overnight for works.

- Universities and hospitals. Oxford Road, the Royal Infirmary and the Christie via the M56 and Princess Parkway.
