Two routes to Praed Street, chosen by the clock
Paddington sits north-west of Hyde Park, so there is no clean motorway approach from Kent by day. The driver takes the A2 to New Cross, the A201 up through the Bricklayers Arms and over Blackfriars Bridge, then west along the Embankment past Westminster, up Park Lane, and onto Edgware Road and Praed Street. It is 24 miles of which the last ten are city streets, hence the wide 55–90 minute window.
Between about 10pm and 6am there is a second option: M25 anticlockwise from Junction 2 to Junction 15, then the M4 into London and the A40 Westway, coming off at the Paddington slip. More miles, fewer traffic lights, and often quicker for a first train west.

- Eastbourne Terrace taxi rank — the western side, level with the platforms and handy for the Heathrow Express and the Elizabeth line entrance.

Leaving Dartford in time for a GWR seat
Long-distance GWR tickets are usually advance fares tied to one train, and the Night Riviera sleeper to Penzance leaves late in the evening with no fallback. Heathrow Express passengers have a train every 15 minutes and can relax a little.

The Embankment and Park Lane are the slow stretches in both peaks, and roadworks around Marble Arch can add a quarter of an hour without warning. Pickups in Bromley, Sidcup and Bexleyheath can take ten minutes off; Gravesend should add fifteen. If you are connecting to a flight via the Heathrow Express, compare the direct Dartford to Heathrow run, which is from £95 and avoids the change entirely.
Why a car makes sense for Paddington in particular
From Dartford station the rail route to Paddington is Southeastern to London Bridge or Charing Cross, then the Bakerloo or the Elizabeth line, with escalators and gaps to negotiate with each bag. It works for a commuter; it is hard going with a family's luggage for a week in Cornwall.

Meeting your train at Paddington and driving home
Coming back from Plymouth or Swansea, give us the train time and origin and we follow it on the live board. If the service is held outside Reading the pickup moves with it, and the free waiting clock does not start until the train is actually in.
The driver waits at the Eastbourne Terrace rank and texts the registration as the train arrives. Come off the platform, turn left along the concourse to the Eastbourne Terrace exit, and the car is on that road. Prefer to be met at the platform end with a name board? Why does Paddington cost more than Victoria or Waterloo from Dartford?
Distance. Victoria and Waterloo are on the near side of the West End; Paddington is beyond Hyde Park, another five or six miles of city streets. That is the difference between £55 and £65.
Which entrance will I be dropped at?
Praed Street by default, which is the front of the station. Ask for Eastbourne Terrace if you are catching the Heathrow Express or the Elizabeth line, as that rank sits alongside the platforms on the western side.
Can I take a taxi to Paddington for the Heathrow Express instead of driving to Heathrow?
You can, but the direct run from Dartford to Heathrow is from £95 and takes 60–90 minutes with no change. Paddington plus the Heathrow Express only makes sense if you have business in town first.
How long does Dartford to Paddington take at 5am?
Around 55 minutes. At that hour the driver often uses the M25 and M4, which adds miles but avoids every traffic light between Blackfriars and Marble Arch. The fare is the same either way.
Do you do the Night Riviera sleeper?
Yes. The sleeper to Penzance leaves Paddington late in the evening, so a pickup in Dartford about an hour and forty minutes beforehand is usual. We drop on Praed Street, a short walk from the sleeper platform.
Will the driver wait if my GWR train into Paddington is late?
