From the Dartford side of the M25 to the M32

Bristol is due west, so the driver takes the M25 anticlockwise from Junction 2 round the south and west of London to Junction 15, where the M4 begins its run west. From there it is Reading, Swindon and Bath's junction at 18 to Junction 19 at Almondsbury, where the M32 branches off and runs straight into the centre, ending beside Cabot Circus. Junction 20 is the turn for Avonmouth, the M5 south and Bristol Airport.

Final-mile choices:

• Temple Meads, Cabot Circus and the Old City: M32 all the way in.
• Clifton, the Downs and the Suspension Bridge: M32 then the A4032 and Whiteladies Road, or M5 to Junction 18 and the Portway along the gorge.
• Bristol Airport: M5 to Junction 22 and the A38, or through the city on the A38; the driver picks by time of day.
• Avonmouth and Royal Portbury Docks: M5 Junction 18 or 19 respectively.
• Filton, Aztec West and UWE Frenchay: come off before the M32 at the Almondsbury interchange.

Weekday mornings the M25 between Junctions 5 and 15 is the slow stretch; overnight the run can be under three hours.

Why the M4 beats Paddington from north Kent

GWR's trains from Paddington to Temple Meads are fast, but Paddington is on the far side of London from Dartford. The full trip means Southeastern into town, the Elizabeth line or a cab across, the train west, and a taxi from Temple Meads to your address. Each of those steps is fine on its own; strung together with two suitcases and a pram they take a morning.

A couple with hand luggage on a weekday might still do better by rail, and we will tell you so. For families, groups, cruise passengers and anyone travelling at awkward hours, the fixed fare wins.

Bristol cruise terminals and Bristol Airport

Cruise ships sail from Avonmouth and, for some lines, Royal Portbury Dock across the river, and both are awkward to reach without a car. Our drivers know the dock gate each terminal uses and the check-in windows, so you arrive at the ship rather than at a barrier in the wrong part of the port. Bristol Airport at Lulsgate is eight miles south of the city on the A38, with its own drop-off zone; any charge is in your fare. From Dartford it is from £240, and for early departures we leave overnight. On the return we track the flight, allow 45 minutes of free waiting after landing, and can meet you in arrivals with a name board on request; see meet and greet.

Passengers landing at Heathrow or Gatwick for a Bristol cruise can be driven straight through: from £170 and £210 respectively.

Temple Meads, Clifton, Ashton Gate and the universities

Bristol's centre has a clean air zone and a growing number of bus-only streets, so drop-off points are worth agreeing beforehand.

• Bristol Temple Meads. Set-down on the station approach off Temple Gate.
• Clifton and the Suspension Bridge. Hotels around the Downs and Clifton Village, reached via Whiteladies Road; the bridge itself carries a small toll that we pay if we cross it.
• Cabot Circus and Broadmead. The M32 ends at the shopping centre car parks, so this is the easiest city drop of all.
• Ashton Gate. Bristol City and Bristol Bears play here off Winterstoke Road. Match-day closures push drops to the Ashton Road side; we agree a pickup point for afterwards.
• University of Bristol and UWE. The Clifton campus for the former; Frenchay off the M32 at Junction 1 for the latter. Term starts mean boxes, so book an estate or MPV.
• Southmead and the BRI. Hospital appointments with wait-and-return available.

Bath and Weston-super-Mare are quoted on the extra distance if you would rather finish there.

Bristol runs from Dartford, Bexley and Gravesend

Fares are built from Dartford DA1 and DA2, taking in Stone, Wilmington, Joydens Wood and Darent Valley Hospital. Bexleyheath, Crayford, Sidcup and Welling pay a little less because they are nearer Junction 2. Greenhithe, Bluewater and Swanscombe add a few pounds, and Gravesend and Northfleet a few more.

Three hours in the car earns a break. We normally suggest Reading or Membury services on the M4, or Leigh Delamere for a stop closer to Bristol, and the fifteen minutes is built into the plan rather than bolted on.
