A2 TO THE SOUTH BANK

The road from Dartford to Cab Road

This is the one terminus where the direct road from Kent is also the obvious one. From Dartford the driver takes the A2 through Bexley, leaves it at New Cross for the Old Kent Road, continues to the Bricklayers Arms and the Elephant and Castle, and drops down St George's Road and Waterloo Road to the station. Eighteen miles, no river crossing, no tunnel.

If the Old Kent Road is closed the fallback is the A20 through Lewisham and Lee to New Cross Gate, or the A200 along the river from Deptford through Rotherhithe and Tower Bridge Road. Both add a few minutes and neither changes the fare.

Where the car stops

  • Cab Road — the taxi rank under the station on the Waterloo Road side, with lifts up to the concourse. Best for luggage.
  • Station Approach — the ramp up to the main entrance by the Victory Arch, closest to the South Western platforms.
  • Waterloo East — the Sandell Street entrance for Southeastern connections.
  • South Bank — the National Theatre stage door on Upper Ground, the Southbank Centre on Belvedere Road, or the London Eye pier.
TRAINS TO THE SOUTH COAST

Timing the pickup for a South Western departure

South Western Railway runs frequently to Southampton, Portsmouth and Bournemouth, but advance fares to Exeter and the West Country are tied to one service, and Waterloo's platforms are spread wide across the concourse. The driver aims to land you with 15 minutes to spare.

10:00–15:301h 25m ahead

After 20:001h ahead

The Old Kent Road between the Bricklayers Arms and New Cross is the slow stretch in both peaks. Bromley, Sidcup and Bexleyheath pickups can leave ten minutes later than the table; Gravesend fifteen minutes earlier. Cruising from Southampton? The direct run to the terminals is from £150.

THEATRE, TRAIN OR BOTH

The bookings that make sense as a car rather than a train

Southeastern from Dartford reaches Waterloo East in about 40 minutes and, on a weekday with one bag, we would not talk you out of it. The Waterloo jobs we take are mostly these.

South Bank evenings

A 7:30pm curtain at the National or the Old Vic, and a car home afterwards rather than a wait at Waterloo East for the last Dartford train.

Holiday luggage west

Two weeks in Devon with a pushchair, a cool box and four cases. The lift from Cab Road to the concourse beats Southeastern's stairs at London Bridge.

Early SWR departures

A 06:00 train to Exeter needs you there before Southeastern's first service arrives.

Groups of six or eight

An MPV from £65 or a minibus from £78 splits cheaper than off-peak rail fares for a stag or hen party catching a train to Bournemouth.

The price is agreed when the booking is confirmed and does not respond to the traffic; regular users can settle by monthly business invoice.

AFTER THE SHOW

Getting collected from Waterloo or the South Bank

For trains in from the south coast, send us the service time and starting point and we track it live, so a delay at Woking moves the driver's arrival rather than your waiting allowance. Take the lifts down to Cab Road and the car's registration will already be in your messages.

For theatre and concert pickups we ask for the venue and the advertised finish time, then add a margin for curtain calls. Meeting points that work well:

  • National Theatre — Upper Ground, by the stage door end, away from the taxi scrum on the riverside.
  • Southbank Centre and Royal Festival Hall — Belvedere Road, behind the hall.
  • London Eye and County Hall — York Road, opposite the station.
  • Waterloo East — the Sandell Street entrance.

Want a named board under the Victory Arch? Ask when booking; the guide charge is £10. The first 15 minutes of waiting, from the tracked arrival or the agreed time, are free. See also Dartford to Victoria and late night London taxis.

Dartford to Waterloo taxi — questions

How much is a taxi from Dartford to Waterloo?

From £52 one way for a saloon, ULEZ included. Bromley is from £42, Sidcup £45, Bexleyheath £48, Swanley £55, Greenhithe £56 and Gravesend £64. Six in an MPV from Dartford is from £65; eight in the minibus from £78.

Where does the taxi drop off at Waterloo?

At the Cab Road rank underneath the station by default, which has lifts straight up to the concourse and suits luggage. Ask for Station Approach if you want the Victory Arch entrance, or Sandell Street for Waterloo East.

Can you take me to the National Theatre or the Southbank Centre?

Yes, for the same £52 from Dartford. The driver drops on Upper Ground for the National, Belvedere Road for the Southbank Centre, or York Road for the London Eye, and can collect afterwards from the same spot.

How long does Dartford to Waterloo take?

40–70 minutes for 18 miles. The Old Kent Road between New Cross and the Bricklayers Arms sets the pace; outside the peaks the run is usually under 50 minutes and before 6am nearer 40.

Is there a ULEZ or Dart Charge on this trip?

ULEZ starts at the Bexley border and is built into the £52. No Dart Charge is involved because the car never goes near the Dartford Crossing.

Will the driver wait if my train from Southampton is late into Waterloo?

Yes. Give us the train and we follow it live; the driver arrives at Cab Road for the real arrival time and your 15 minutes of free waiting starts then, not at the timetabled time.

Can I be picked up from Waterloo after a show at 11pm?

Yes. Tell us the venue and finish time and we book the pickup with a margin for the curtain call. The driver waits on Upper Ground, Belvedere Road or York Road as agreed and texts the registration.

Is a taxi to Waterloo cheaper than the train for a family?

Often, yes. Two adults and two children at peak time from Dartford, plus the taxi to Dartford station, comes to more than £52, and the car takes the luggage door to door without the change at London Bridge.
